TORONTO CRAFT MINUTES

December Event:

Pedal to the Metal Craft Fair
Sunday, December 7, 2003, 12 - 6 pm
at The Gladstone Hotel

It's kind of scary how amazingly successful Pedal to the Metal was. The vendors had some amazing stuff for sale, the bands all rocked it hard, tons of people showed up, only a few people got kicked out, and all of them for being babies, the Toronto church of craft now has a budget for workshops that doesn't come from the change in Sister Good and Sister Evil's pockets, and it was lots of fun.

The most convincing sign of its success was that I overheard a couple of girls saying to one another "I'm really surprised how many crafts there are here that are about sex! I never thought crafts could be like that. I thought it was, like, grandma stuff!"

We're a small (and growing) grassroots crafty collective rebelling against the culture of mass production. Not only are the things we create our own, but in this glossy, fabricated world, the simple act of creation is transcendent. I.e., we make things because it makes us happy.
